Released by Superintendent Chip Mehaffey at 3:40 pm, Feb 16, 2018

Today, Loogootee High School administration received information from a staff member about a potential threat by a student at Loogootee High School.  The threat was not directed at any specific staff member or students.  Loogootee Community Schools administration detained the student, implemented our internal security protocol, and immediately contacted law enforcement, who arrived quickly and conducted a full investigation.

The student was taken into custody by law enforcement officials.  During the course of the investigation, a second threat was made by another student who was immediately detained and also taken into custody.  While a legitimate threat was never substantiated by any evidence, Loogootee Community Schools administration and law enforcement officials decided to take the precaution of dismissing students early so a thorough search of our buildings could be conducted.  The comprehensive search was completed at 2:30 pm and confirmed that no credible threat existed.

The safety and well-being of Loogootee students and staff is paramount and the Loogootee Community School Corporation has and will continue to take all necessary actions to protect our students and staff.

Following the tragedy in Marshall County, Kentucky in January, 2018, and prior to this issue, Loogootee Community Schools made the decision to contact city, county, and state law enforcement branches requesting a continual, increased presence at our schools.  This increased presence began in January of this year.

We understand there will be questions from parents and our community for further information.  Please know that state and federal law restricts our ability as a district to provide certain details about the situation at this time.

Loogootee Community Schools, in conjunction with law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office, will hold a Community School Safety Forum on Monday, February 19 at 6:00 pm in the Loogootee High School Auditorium to provide additional details regarding school safety.
