PRESS RELEASE

LOOGOOTEE HIGH SCHOOL APPROVED AS A STEM CERTIFIED SCHOOL

May 7, 2019

Loogootee, Indiana - Loogootee High School is excited to announce that the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) has completed their evaluation and review of schools around the state.  From this process, Loogootee High School has been designated as a STEM Certified School. STEM education encompasses four academic disciplines - science, technology, engineering and mathematics - in an interdisciplinary and applied approach.

The only public high schools in Indiana with the “STEM Certified School” distinction are:

  • Loogootee High School

  • Ben Davis High School and Ben Davis University High School

  • Columbus Signature Academy New Tech High School

  • Hobart High School

  • The STEM Academy at Penn High School

“A quality education begins with amazing educators and excellent materials,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “Materials rooted in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics help prepare our students for a successful life beyond high school. I want to commend these schools for becoming STEM Certified. We are grateful for their passion and dedication.”

Schools are selected based on their commitment to teaching STEM disciplines throughout the entire school. STEM Certified schools exemplify a highly non-traditional approach to education, employing a great deal of inquiry, project-based learning, community engagement, entrepreneurship, student centered classrooms, integration into humanities and related arts, and out-of-school STEM activities. To become certified, each school completed a rigorous application and review process.

“I am proud that our outstanding teachers continually work to make their classrooms student-centered where all types of learners can thrive and become college and career ready,” said Loogootee Schools Superintendent Chip Mehaffey.  “It is thrilling and validating to have LHS named as a “STEM Certified School.”
